This glossary defines key terms and concepts. Please note that words set in small capital letters are themselves defined in the glossary.

scholarly literature Writing from a scholarly field. See also review of scholarly literature.

secondary source An analysis or interpretation of a primary source. In writing about the Revolutionary War, a researcher would likely consider the Declaration of Independence a primary source and a textbook's description of the writing of the document a secondary source.

signal phrase A phrase used to attribute quoted, paraphrased, or summarized material to a source, as in "she said" or "he claimed."

slippery slope A fallacy that asserts, without evidence, that one event will lead to a series of other events that will culminate in a cataclysm.

stance A writer's or speaker's attitude toward his or her subject as conveyed through the tone and the words chosen.

strategy A pattern for organizing text to analyze cause and effect, classify and divide, compare and contrast, define, describe, explain a process, narrate, and so on.

style In writing, the arrangement of sentences, phrases, words, and punctuation to achieve a desired effect; also, the rules of capitalization, punctuation, and so on recommended for documentation of a source.

summary A condensation of a text into a briefer but still faithful version in lieu of a paraphrase or a quotation.
