This glossary defines key terms and concepts. Please note that words set in small capital letters are themselves defined in the glossary.



M


medium (pl., media) A means for communicating— for example, in print, with speech, or online. Texts consisting of words are said to use verbal media, whereas photographs, films, and sculptures are examples of visual media (though some verbal texts include visual images, and some visual texts include words).

memoir A genre that focuses on something significant from the writer's past. Key Features: good story • vivid details • clear significance

MLA style A system of documenting sources in the humanities and fine arts. MLA stands for the Modern Language Association. (See also documentation.)
