This glossary defines key terms and concepts.
Please note that words set in small capital letters are
themselves defined in the glossary.
G
generating ideas and text A set of processes
including clustering, cubing, discovery drafting,
freewriting, letter writing, listing, looping, outlining,
and questioning.
genre A kind of text marked by and expected to
have certain key features and to follow certain conventions
of style and presentation. In the literary
world, readers recognize such genres as the short
story and novel (which are expected to have plots)
and the poem (which may not have a plot but has
other characteristics, such as rhythm); in academic
and workplace settings, readers and writers focus
on other genres, which also meet expectations in
content, style, and appearance. Genres covered in
the Norton Field Guide include abstracts, annotated
bibliographies, application letters, arguments,
evaluations, lab reports, literacy narratives, literary
analyses, profiles, proposals, reflections,
résumés, reports, textual analyses, and reviews
of scholarly literature.
