Text on p. 2074 of the full Ninth Edition and p. 1423 of the shorter Ninth Edition.
Reading Questions
1. What reasons does Antigone give for burying Polyneices (p. 2013 of the full Ninth Edition and p. 1621 of the shorter Eight Edition)? Creon for banning the burial (p. 2017 LIT, 1625 LIT Shorter)? Do they share any common ground? Which reasons seem more compelling to you at the beginning of the play? Later? Are there hints of other motives which are not voiced?
2. Which character(s) do you most sympathize with at the beginning of the play? Do your sympathies shift at all? How much might your gender or age influence your response?
3. What perspective does the Chorus present? Does its opinion change? If so, why?
4. Do you need a summary of the play? If so, check out Andrew Wilson's site. This site also includes discussion of the following questions: How old was Antigone? The character of Creon? How should Ismene be portrayed?
5. This play is related to the Oedipus myth, as told by Sophocles in Oedipus the King (p. 1778 of the full Ninth Edition and p. 1386 of the shorter Eight Edition) which details the heritage of pride, error, and catastrophe of this family. For a background relevant to both plays, consult John Porter's course notes (University of Saskatchewan). Look for references and similarities to the story in Antigone.
