Reading Questions
1. Which characters do you find the most and least sympathetic? To what degree are your sympathies directed by the playwright and by your own experience?
2. Imagine yourself directing this play. What characteristics would you look for in the actors portraying each character? The stage directions are extensive and go beyond descriptions of scenery: How would you ask the actors to express the spirit of these directions?
3. Which issues are resolved by the ending, and which are not? Has hope won out over despair?
4. In 1959, this play was considered a realistic portrayal of a contemporary problem, yet it has continued to be produced on stage and film. What do you think accounts for its continuing popularity? Do you think its effect would be different on predominantly white and predominantly African American audiences?
