Study Questions 1. Several examples of tissue interactions (that is, embryonic induction) have been discussed in this chapter. Are there any examples of differentiation of ectoderm that do not involve an induction?
2. What makes the induction of tissues by the Spemann organizer different from any other examples of tissue interactions?
3. We have learned that the emigration of the neural crest cells occurs over an extended period of time. Can you devise a way to determine whether crest cells emerging early from the neural tube have the same fate as those emerging later?
4. A large number of growth factors, some of which act only on nervous tissues (neurotrophic factors), are implicated in neural development. How would you go about finding out whether a particular growth factor, such as FGF8, is active in neural development?
