In this chapter we follow the story of the birth of modern science as humans discovered regular patterns in the motions of the planets, then went on to explain those patterns with fundamental physical laws. Along the way we will explore
- Empirical rules discovered by Kepler that describe the elliptical orbits of planets around the Sun.
- Theoretical physical laws discovered by Newton and Galileo that govern the motion of all objects.
- The use of proportionality to describe patterns and relationships in nature.
- The nature of scientific theories, the roles of empirical and theoretical science, and the difference between science and pseudoscience.
- How Newton’s laws of motion and an inverse square law of gravitation combine to explain an orbit as one body falling freely around another.
- The cosmological principle that grew from the startling realization that the heavens and Earth are governed by the same physical laws.
- How theories lead to new knowledge, such as the way Newton’s derivation of Kepler’s third law is used to measure the masses of objects from observations of orbital motions.
