Real Audio - Improvisation sur Mallarmé
The sparse texture of this example is typical of Boulez's writing as is the seeming independence of all the parts. The text is a sonnet by Mallarmé. The vocalist's melody makes use of a limited number of pitches, creating an almost hypnotic effect. This is heightened by the fact that each pitch is sung in only one register, creating an unchanging outline for the melody.
