Real Audio - Habañera
Ravel often made use of "exotic" materials, especially those that evoked images of Spain. This short work (which appears in orchestral form as part of his Rhapsodie espagnole) subtly makes reference to the style of the Spanish habañera, and its underlying rhythm might bring to mind Bizet's famous aria from Carmen.

Real Audio - "Rigaudon" from Le Tombeau de Couperin
Ravel wrote this piece in 1917, both as an homage to the French Baroque composer François Couperin (1688-1733), and as a memorial to friends killed in World War I. The piece is a fine example of the Neoclassical trend. It takes the outward form of the rigaudon ( a French folk and court dance) and recasts it in modern terms. The clarity and regularity is a hallmark of this style.
