Real Audio -The Cascades
Rags were usually in a fairly quick tempo with clear sections based on contrasting ideas. "The Cascades," like his most famous "Maple Leaf Rag," is a good example of this style. In this excerpt you can hear the repeated first section and the beginning of the contrasting second section.

Real Audio -Solace
Not all of Joplin's pieces were true rags. Some were waltzes, some were two-steps and some were marches ( one is labeled an Afro-American Intermezzo, recalling Liszt and Chopin). "Solace" is subtitled "A Mexican Serenade," and in the background you can hear the common Latin-American rhythmic pattern of ONE two and THREE FOUR familiar from the habañera and tango.
