Real Audio - Prelude
The music of this suite is taken mostly from incidental music for Strauss's opera, based on Molière's comedy-ballet of the same name. The style is faux-eighteenth century, and in this excerpt (from the prelude to the first act), you can hear a "classical" style, distorted somewhat by twentieth-century harmonies and rhythms—the basic device of neoclassicism.
