Real Audio - The Unanswered Question
This work is something of a Transcendental program piece. The strings (playing backstage) represent eternity while the trumpet asks a serious question in a forthright manner and is mocked each time by the winds (growing increasingly more dissonant with each answer). In the end, no answer is given, and the strings fade away.

Real Audio - The Fourth of July from Holidays (Symphony)
One of the hallmarks of Ives' style is his use of collage technique. Here, fragments (sometimes distorted) of well-known melodies are juxtaposed to create the impression of a Fourth of July celebration. In this excerpt, you can hear "Battle Cry of Freedom," "Reveille," and "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean"-among others.
