Real Audio - Das Lied von der Erde
Mahler's power as both a vocal and orchestral composer are clearly in evidence here. Das Lied von der Erde is a six-movement symphony that sets translations of Chinese nature poems. The first movement ("Drinking song of the Earth's Troubles") explores the conflict of nature's beauty and our short, often troubled existence. The theme heard at the beginning of the excerpt ("Dunkel is das Leben, ist der Tod"—"Dark is life, is death") is a recurring one in the movement.
