Real Audio - Symphony No.1 : third movement
Parody was an important part of Mahler's musical world. Here a parody of a children's song is used for a mock-sad funeral march as the animals carry the body of the dead hunter. The simplicity of the music is an important component of Mahler's ironic touch.
