Real Audio - Third Movement
Schumann wrote this symphony using themes that carried over from movement to movement, and made the transitions between movements less clearly defined (both ideas from Beethoven’s symphonies). This lively scherzo is marked by three strong chords—a "hammerstroke" motive that is also an important feature of the last movement.
