Real Audio - Prelude to Tristan und Isolde
The opening measures of Wagner's prelude have held a particular fascination for listeners to and students of music. The unresolved harmony (called by theorists the "Tristan chord") anticipates the conflict of the opera, resolved (dramatically and musically) only at the end of the entire work.

Real Audio - "Ride of the Valkyries" from Die Walküre
With the exception of the "Wedding March" from Lohengrin, the "Ride of the Valkyries" may be Wagner's most well-known piece. The music accompanies the entrance of the Valkyries, who swoop down from the heavens to take the souls of warriors killed in battle to their reward in Valhalla.

Real Audio - Prelude to Act One of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
The march-like feel of this prelude illustrates Wagner's ability to create grandiose musical effects to match the pageantry on stage. His music in this style had a strong effect on later composers such as the Englishman Edward Elgar and film composers such as John Williams.
