Peter Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.5 and Serenade for Strings in C major, Op.48

Sound icon Real Audio - Symphony No. 5: IV
The Fifth Symphony, with its ever present "fate" motive, is one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular works. Tchaikovsky left notes on the ideas of the symphony (though not an actual program) that range from "Complete submission to fate . . ." to "Consolation—a beam of light . . ." and finally "No, no hope!" In this excerpt, the "fate" motive, presented in the brass and surrounded by swirling strings and winds, suggests a more triumphant mood.

Sound icon Real Audio - Serenade for Strings: Finale
Although mostly remembered for his big orchestral pieces, Tchaikovsky could do marvelous things with more limited ensembles and smaller ideas. This bright work for strings is a perfect example. In the final movement, he builds on a lively Russian melody. His expert string writing creates a wide variety of colors.
