Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 4

Sound icon Real Audio - Symphony No. 4, IV
For the last movement of his Fourth Symphony, Mahler set a poem from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn," a collection of poems that played a large role in Mahler's development as a composer of songs. The setting is simple and childlike, presenting a naïve vision of paradise with all the saints playing very human roles. Mahler was careful to note in the score that it was to be performed "without the slightest hint of parody," so that its naïve nature did not disintegrate into childishness.
