Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 4 in E minor

Sound icon Real Audio - Symphony no. 4 : IV
Brahms often liked to use older approaches to form in his works. In this movement, he uses the Baroque passacaglia form. The rising line, and the harmonies associated with it, forms an unchanging background for a series of 33 variations.

For a twentieth century treatment of this form, see Anton Webern's Passacaglia, Op.1
