Anton Webern - Passacaglia, Op.1 and Variations for Orchestra, Op.30

Sound icon Real Audio - Passacaglia, Op.1
Webern's first work ( and his longest single movement) was the result of his four years of study with Schoenberg. He uses a rich, intensely contrapuntal style, and stretches the bounds of tonality. At the same time it uses a very traditional approach: variations.

One of Webern's last works was also a set of variations. This time, the musical language is that of the fully developed twelve-tone system. The texture, while still intensely contrapuntal, is sparser and almost pointillistic.
