Messiaen begins the work with bold, asymmetrical rhythms. The rising electronic sounds of the ondes martenot (an early electronic keyboard instrument) announces a theme (played by the brass) that will return over the course of this piece.

In a more lyrical passage, the ondes martenot plays the melody (doubled by the violins). In the background, the piano plays a part that Messiaen marks with the words "like a birdsong".

Real Audio - Lutoslawski: Symphony No.3
In this excerpt, Lutoslawski mixes strict notation and what he called "aleatoric counterpoint." The section begins in strict time, with a group of four eighth notes that begin and end the entire work. This section is followed by a clarinet solo accompanied by free counterpoint in the woodwinds and interjections by the piano. At the end it returns to a more clearly metric section.
