George F. Kennan, for many years a Foreign Service Officer, was head of the State Department's first Policy Planning Staff in 1947–1950 and ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1952. He joined the Institute for Advanced Study in 1953 and has written widely on diplomatic history and curretn affairs. Among his many awards are two Pulitzer Prizes and a National Book Award.
