Fang Lizhi was born in Beijin in 1936 and trained in physics at Beijing University. For joining other intellectuals in demanding greater freedom of expression, Fang was expelled from the Communist Party in 1957, and later imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. He nevertheless emerged as one of China's leading experts in astrophysics and cosmology. Officially rehabilitated in 1979, he was again expelled from the party in 1986. In the turmoil following the Tienanmen Square massacre of June 1989, Fang and his wife sought sanctuary within the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Fang is currently professor of physics and astrophysics at the University of Arizona.
