Summer Interns: Sciences
The College Science department is seeking college juniors and seniors to assist with various science textbook editorial projects. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented and organized, with an interest in the editorial processes of textbook publishing. Duties will include assisting with manuscript preparation, clearing reprint permissions, researching market data, correspondence, and day-to-day office activities. Subject areas include chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, and environmental science/studies. A demonstrated interest in science is encouraged. Schedules are flexible, but a commitment of at least three days per week is required. All Norton interns receive a $10/day stipend.

The College History department is seeking an intern to assist with various projects for the summer. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and enthusiastic with an interest in the editorial processes of publishing, as well as an interest in history. Duties will include assisting with photo research for upcoming textbooks, some manuscript preparation, and day-to-day office activities, including copying, mailing, and filing. The intern will also aid in updating a database of World History instructors, and will help with a marketing campaign for Norton History textbooks. Although the schedule is flexible, a commitment of at least two days per week is required. All Norton interns receive a $10/day stipend.

Design Intern
Norton's advertising group is looking for a design intern to assist with day-to-day needs. Activities may include organizing archives, preparing files, proofreading, and typesetting. Candidates must have experience with Adobe CS3; familiarity with Quark and basic HTML skills will come in handy. Interns should be available for at least 3 days a week, but preferably 4-5 days a week.

Music Editorial Intern
W. W. Norton & Company seeks a part-time intern that will assist the music editorial team in the publication of a substantial list of text and trade books, provide information to professors and college bookstores regarding Norton’s music publications, procure music, photo, and text permissions, assist in market research, assist in the writing of copy, and perform various clerical tasks as required. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, a solid background in music including the ability to read music, excellent command of spoken and written English, and the ability to balance a multitude of projects at one time.

College Editorial Intern: Psychology and World Politics
We are seeking editorial interns to help us with our psychology and world politics college lists. We have been on the cutting edge of the psychology market with leading texts like Psychological Science by Gazzaniga, Heatherton, and Diane Halpern, and Social Psychology by Gilovich, Keltner, and Richard Nisbett. On the world politics side we have helped publish leading scholars like Jack Snyder, Amartya Sen, and Ross Baker.
Responsibilities will include the following:
- Assisting in the preparation of manuscripts for production
- Preparing manuscript copy
- Proofreading
- Marketing and permissions research
- Handling copyright, royalty, and trademark compliance issues
- Researching potential reviewers for forthcoming titles
- Assisting with administrative duties, including copying, mailing, and filing
While a strong a background in psychology is not a requirement, a passion for publishing and general awareness of international politics is a must. Ideal candidates should be driven, creative, and motivated to think of new, innovative ideas.
Applicants with experience in publishing, media, or journalism is a plus. A minimum of two years undergraduate education is required.
All Norton interns receive a $10/day stipend and all disciplines and majors are welcome to apply. Summer internship begins late May or early June and lasts through the summer.

Trade Department
Publicity Department Internships
The Trade Publicity Department at W. W. Norton & Company seeks bright, energetic, and detail-oriented individuals with superior writing and oral communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, to participate in our internship program. Interns will assist in various projects, from basic office tasks like filing and photocopying clips to assisting publicists with mailings, review chasing, assembling press kits, writing and editing pitch letters, making follow-up calls, and keeping our database up-to-date by researching media contacts. The ideal candidate will be someone who loves reading and is interested in learning more about book publishing. He or she must be able to prioritize, multitask, and work independently and efficiently. Knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel and an excellent phone manner are also helpful.
All Norton interns are paid $10 a day, and schedules are flexible. We require a commitment of two to three days per week.
The deadline for summer internships is April 15, 2008.

Editorial Department Internships
The trade department at Norton publishes nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Recent titles include Paul Krugman'sThe Conscience of a Liberal, Globalization and Its Discontents by Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz, Irvine Welsh's Porno, The Selected Stories of Patricia Highsmith, Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm, The Collected Poems by former Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz, Stephen Greenblatt's Will in the World, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond.
Interns in the trade editorial department are asked to do everything from reading manuscripts and proposals to writing reader's reports, obtaining permissions for forthcoming books, working on catalog and jacket copy, attending editorial meetings, and performing basic office tasks like filing and copying. In general, your job is to help the editorial assistants move projects along from the manuscript stage all the way to the bookstore. Qualified candidates are bright, detail-oriented, and responsible students who enjoy reading, write well, and, most importantly, want to learn about book publishing.
In exchange for their time, effort, and much appreciated contributions, Norton interns receive valuable exposure to the editorial experience and a rich sense of the publishing world. All interns are paid $10 a day. Schedules are flexible, and we accept both full and part-time interns during all seasons.

Rights & Contracts Intern
The contracts, rights, and production departments of W. W. Norton & Company seek interns to help with administrative tasks and learn the business and legal foundations of book publishing.
Work includes researching rights queries, filing and organizational work including work on production spreadsheets and contract reports, and special projects such as researching the status of electronic rights to older books.
Candidates should be interested in learning about the business side of book publishing, including standard publishing contract terms, the place of rights sales and licensing deals such as audio, book club, and e-book arrangements in publishing strategies, the role of literary agents, and the manufacturing of books. This is not an editorial position.
Schedule flexible (minimum commitment of two days a week preferred), internship unpaid with a stipend of $10/day worked to help defray expenses.

Norton Professional Books
Internship Positions
Norton Professional Books is a small but busy division within Norton (see our
website at www.wwnorton.com/npb) that
publishes books in two categories: books for psychotherapists and other mental
health professionals; and books for architects and designers. Our books are
intended mainly for professionals but do also have some cross-over appeal for
general consumers. Some recent publications include, on the psych side, Biting
the Hand That Starves You: Inspiring Resistance to Anorexia/Bulimia, and, on
the architecture/design side, A Field Guide to Sprawl.
We are looking for interns to help principally with marketing and publicity
work for our books, and to do some editorial work on an as-needed basis. Duties
will vary but are likely to include: mailings, data entry, updating marketing
files, proofreading catalogs and publicity materials, researching media contacts
and events related to our books. Interns will have an opportunity to work
closely with everyone in our division. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic,
detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have an interest in learning
about all aspects of book publishing. Related experience is helpful but not
required.
Schedule flexible, but minimum requested commitment is two days a
week. Internship is unpaid with a stipend of $10 a day per day of work.
