The Country Houses of David Adler

by Stephen M. Salny
Introduction by Franz Schulze

This book discusses in depth fifteen representative 'great houses" by the eclectic architect (1882-1949), with many interiors by Adler's sister, the noted designer Frances Elkins. The book is richly illustrated with archival photographs and newly drawn plans of the luxurious homes and gardens commissioned by Adler's socially prominent clients from Sarasota, Florida, to Hawaii, and especially on the shore of Lake Michigan. In addition, David Adler's work is fully documented in the form of a catalogue raisonné.

Praise for The Country Houses of David Adler:

“Stephen M. Salny’s study of David Adler (1882-1949) is the culmination of three deciades of work. His focus is on the country houses and his goal is to prove Adler worth of a place in the history of american building. Salny is a thorough research and a coherent, fluent writer. He contacted more than a thousand people associated with the architect and developed an impressive archive that included Adler’s job book, drawings, scrapbooks, and even his postcard collection….If more studies of this quality emerge, we should eventually have a much more comprehensive view of American architecture in the early twnetieth century.”
––Susan Frazer, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians 62:1, March 2003

“Because of Salny's efforts, Adler's work may be getting more national attention today than it did when he was alive. . . . Although it's primarily an architectural study, Salny's book is also valuable as social history.”
The Chicago Sun

“An exploration of Adler's best projects.the images in the book are black and white.[but] Salny's detailed descriptions of Adler's homes bring to each a full-depth of color.”
Shelter Chicago

“Richly illustrated.unveils the broad scope of the architect's oeuvre as well as intimate looks at the characteristic features and details unique to each house.”
